In addition to his active career as a bassist, composer, and bandleader, Max Johnson has been teaching music for the past twenty years. His experiences as a creator and performer in jazz, classical music, bluegrass, and rock genres provide him with a uniquely diverse perspective on music pedagogy. These experiences have enabled him to teach classes for the past six years in jazz history, 18th-century harmony, introduction to music theory, classical music history, and music appreciation at the University of Pennsylvania, Brooklyn College, the College of Staten Island, and Queensboro Community College.

In addition, he offers private lessons and master classes in upright and electric bass, improvisation, composition, music theory, and jazz history. His individualistic approach to music has led him to present workshops at institutions such as the University of Richmond, University of Vermont, Vermont College of Fine Arts, The Dublin School, University of Wisconsin, The New School, and The Rhythmic Music Conservatory in Copenhagen.
